‘It's kind of fun to do the impossible.’
-Walt Disney
Walter Elias "Walt" Disney was born on December 5, 1901, in the Hermosa section of Chicago, Illinois. He lived most of his childhood in Marceline, Missouri, where he began drawing, painting and selling pictures to neighbors and family friends. In 1911, his family moved to Kansas City, where Disney developed a love for trains.
Disney was an extremely innovative person. He worked as an apprentice artist at the Pesmen-Rubin Commercial Art Studio. He used to create illustrations for advertisements. There he befriended Ub Iwerks, an amazing animator.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was the first cartoon created by Disney and animator Ub Iwerks for Universal Studios. They produced 26 "Oswald" cartoons, but lost the rights to the character in a contract dispute with the studio.
After losing Oswald, Disney started working on another cartoon, and this is how Mickey Mouse came into existence. Disney failed 300 times before coming up with Mickey. The first creation of Mickey Mouse was an animated film called ‘Steamboat Willie’. It was released with synchronized sound, it threw silent animation into discontinuity and was the foundation to an empire.
After Mickey Mouse, the Disney franchise released its first movie ‘Snow white and the Seven Dwarfs’. It turned out to be a huge success. After ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ many more movies came along like ‘Pinnochio’, ‘Fantasia’, ‘Dumbo’, and so on.
Leaving us with an amazing franchise of so many magical movies and filling our hearts with hope, imagination and belief, Disney sadly passed away from lung cancer on December 15th, 1966. He personally oversaw ‘The Jungle Book’, which was the last animated film he created before he died. This movie is the one to hold the saddest legacy.
