"There is no such thing as race. None. There is just a human race – scientifically, anthropologically."
― Toni Morrison, American Novelist
Racism is the bigoted belief that some people are better and superior to others due to their genetic traits corresponding to their skin colour and race. It refers to the thought that inherent physical appearance has a link with personality and intelligence.
Many people, to date, use racism as an excuse to justify horrific behaviours towards others. Such unjustifiable behaviour and actions bring about mental stress, social harassment, and even physical assaults at times. Since we have let the racist comments and activities go unnoticed, it has been left untreated and led to more division and anger between the two different people of different backgrounds. It has become a never-ending, vicious cycle and a massive crisis in today’s world.
Racism makes people feel sorry for being born a certain way or having a particular skin colour. Calling anyone names on the basis of their appearance is a very saddening and hurtful thing to do. Everyone deserves to be treated equally and happily because after all we are humans and God has created us all with equality and love. No one deserves to be hated or mistreated.
No one can choose to be black, white, dark, fair, or anything in particular. God has made us, and there is nothing that should make us feel guilty about that. It is ridiculous and inhuman to make fun of people due to their cultural background or the colour of their skin.
Talking about anyone’s appearance can affect the person in several ways. They can get anxiety, feel self concerned, sad, misunderstood, low, have low self esteem, etc. In some cases people start consuming tablets to change their skin colour or use intoxicated creams or serums to look better when after all everyone is pretty and perfect the way they are.
We keep talking about how modern society embraces diverse cultures and diverse people. We try to accomplish gigantic things like World Peace, eradicated hunger and poverty, stop social discrimination, work on water crisis, etc. Yet, we are not ready to unite to make such changes happen. Not only that, but we still hold grudges against each other for their appearance.
It is possible to eradicate racism in our society if we are more open about such sensitive topics and give simple matters like this a thought. Most of us are much too self-centred to think about such obstacles. It is so commonplace a behaviour that we forget its adverse effects. It is high time we made a change.
To end this piece, I would like to quote the famous song of Michael Jackson:
“It don’t matter if you’re black or white!"
