Almost every fan of Football (or Soccer as referred to In the USA) Is used to the Yellow and Red Card Rule - The Referee will raise a Yellow Card if he or she feels a player is being too aggressive, and will officially warn the player, on the other hand if the referee raises a Red Card, then that means the player has been dismissed/ejected from the game and the team will have to play with one less player for the remainder of the match.
But for the first time in the History of Football, A new White Card was shown; this happened recently on 21’st January, 2023 at the Women’s Cup Quarter Final Match between Benfica and Sporting Lisbon when a fan in the crowd had fainted and the doctors of both the teams went to help. Upon seeing this the referee Catarina Campos raised the notorious White Card.
As of now, the White Card has only been used in Portugal (As it was issued by the Portuguese Football Federation) and reminds many fans of the short-lived reign of the Green Card which was used for many different purposes and reasons may that be - awarding sportsmanship or a middle sibling of the Red and Yellow Cards.
Fun Facts -
This match had a record breaking crowd for Women’s Football.
The crowd stood up after the White Card was shown.
Benfica Proceeded to win the match later, score being 5-0
This of course makes Catarina Campos the first referee to show the White Card.
While it may not make sense to many fans of Football why the requirement of this card even exists in the first place, in the future it will surely be interesting to see how referees across the globe choose to use this new weapon that’s been added to their Arsenal (pun intended).
