GAMING 101: The tech behind cross-progression

Single platform gaming is so last year. The future of gaming belongs to cross platform and cross progression. For the uninitiated, next gen gaming does not restrict you from playing across devices and platforms.

A true gamer would know the value of retaining their performance across different platforms like Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, PC, et cetera especially if they are playing competitively. This ability to start where you stopped last on a totally different platform is known as cross-progression. The science behind this cannot live without features is a bit more complex than we can imagine. When it comes to storing the progress of a gamer, the game not only needs to remember the player's profile but also their last played character, their game statistics, their victories and defeats. Even though cloud gaming allowed players to move from one device to another without changing profiles, their progress in the game levels did not get transported in this process.

Enter cross-progression- The real gamechanger! This works by using a technique called account linking. By this when an account is originally created on a certain device that account can be used to identify which platform the player is playing (PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Switch, et cetera). Using this account info there are several partitions created to allow data to be stored for each device. Now, each partition is given the right to access the data from the other partitions. This enables cross platform cross progression for the gamer. Once the player logs in to one device, they cannot be parallelly logged in with the same account on another device. This is done to prevent hacking and misuse of player accounts. In certain scenarios this is also used as an anti-cheat.

As the world progresses so does cross progression. It is improving day by day as software developers are coming up with new ideas to ensure that you can play at any time any place and still retain your all time best records.
