Gender Inequality in Rural India

Have you ever heard someone saying something along the lines of “barbies are for girls'' or “cars are for boys'' or “you're a girl, you can't wear that!” or “you’re a man, you can't wear makeup”? I am talking about gender inequality. In a time when the world is so up to date, the majority of countries still have a system of gender inequality. What is gender inequality? Let me tell you - It is the prejudice and discrimination against people due to their gender. This bias creates inequity between different genders and also fuels gender-based violence.

Gender inequality is very prominent in rural India. In villages, girls drop out of school early so that they can learn how to run a household. The women and girls tend to do all the chores, from fetching water to keeping the house clean. In fact, in certain places like Rajasthan, women and girls have to wear ghunghats to stay veiled from the view of men.

Child marriage is very common in villages. The women are told to forget their dreams and devote themselves to their families. So many successful athletes, artists and entrepreneurs could come out of villages if they were given the chance. Men in the villages get jobs in the city and send food home and when they're old, all they do is sit around lazily and talk while their wives manage all their work.

Rural India doesn’t seem like it is going to change its conservative thoughts easily. But with time, we can hope that they, too, realise that differentiating between people based on their gender, is irrational and pointless.
