Gods, Monsters, and Adolescence: A half boy, half god, all hero’s journey

What if you discovered that you were the son of a Greek god? This is the reality for Percy Jackson, a seemingly ordinary 12-year-old. The series of novels “Percy Jackson” takes us on a thrilling journey through a world where Greek mythology comes alive in the 21st century.

The first book in the Percy Jackson series introduces us to Percy, a 12-year-old boy diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD. His life takes a dramatic turn when he discovers that he is a demigod, the son of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Percy is sent to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods, where he embarks on a quest to prevent a war among the gods. The plot is fast-paced and filled with thrilling adventures, and unexpected twists that keep the readers on the edge of their seats.

The Percy Jackson series is not just an entertaining read, it's also rich with lessons that relate with readers of all ages. Through Percy's adventures, readers learn about the importance of friendship, loyalty, and bravery. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover show us that true friends stick together, even while facing daunting challenges. The books teach us about accepting yourself. Percy starts as a troubled kid who feels out of place in the 'normal' world, but as he accepts his identity, he finds his true strength. The books teach us that everyone can be a hero like Percy’s mom, hinting at the idea that our circumstances do not define us, but our actions do. The idea that ignorance can lead to our downfall is also hinted at. This is evident in the characters who underestimate Percy and his friends due to their youth. Time and time again, these characters are proven wrong as Percy and his team use their wit, courage, and abilities to overcome obstacles. For instance, the gods often dismiss their demigod children, failing to realize their potential, which leads to dire consequences.

A favorite among most who have read these series, this series is a must-read.
