Happiness - A choice

“People are about as happy as they make their minds up to be.”-Abraham Lincoln

In life, we all face difficult situations and failure. We can either focus on the negativity or choose to accept it and look for the positive in the situation. We can’t change the situation but we can change the way we view it. If we keep thinking negatively, we will not be able to be happy. Sometimes we just have to attempt to be happy by appreciating the little things. Happiness is not always materialistic; it is about doing activities that bring us joy, like spending time with our loved ones, watching movies and shows, eating our favorite food, listening to music, reading books or even sitting in solitude. The choices we make determine our happiness, and thus we must actively choose to try to be happy every day.

We often feel that by obtaining our set goals, we will be happy. But that is satisfaction. We achieved something we worked hard for and felt a sense of accomplishment. However, achieving our goals can only give us temporary satisfaction, not happiness. We should work hard towards achieving our goals and be happy that we tried, irrespective of the results. Sometimes we desire certain things and feel that possessing those would make us happy. But as it is rightly said, “Money can't buy happiness.” If we only chase money or materialistic things we will never be happy. We will always yearn for more and never be satisfied. Thus, the key to being happy lies within us and only we can discover it.

In the ongoing pandemic, it has become harder for everyone to stay optimistic. In these uncertain times, many people, including students, are going through mental health problems. It is hard to look for happiness when we are away from our friends, colleagues and family but we must remember that this too shall pass.

It is not possible for one to be happy all the time. We are humans and we go through other emotions. But happiness is also about believing that better days are going to come. If we are hopeful, we can be happy. It is about believing that no matter how dark the tunnel is, there is light at the end of it.

“Happiness is letting go of what you think your life is supposed to look like and celebrating it for everything that it is.” -Unknown
