How Solar Energy Got So Cheap?

It's the 70's and India has purchased its first solar cell. However, back in those days the solar cells were quite expensive. If you were to put them on your roof and try to generate electricity, it would cost you 50$ per watt. Those high costs made it difficult for people to consider solar energy as a viable option in battling climate change. However it's all different now.

The cost of solar energy in India has fallen significantly over the past few years. According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency, the average cost of electricity from utility-scale solar photovoltaic projects in India fell by 79% between 2010 and 2020.

The cost of rooftop solar systems in India has also decreased sharply over the same period. In some states, such as Gujarat and Rajasthan, the cost of rooftop solar systems has dropped below 20,000 rupees per kilowatt, making it more affordable for households and businesses to install solar panels on their rooftops.

But how did this happen? Well, just like how you might save money by buying things in bulk, the same thing happened with solar energy. With emerging environmental activists encouraging people to use solar energy, more people started using solar energy and more companies started making solar panels. Thus, the cost became cheaper due to more materials being sold.

Plus, the Indian government supports the use of solar energy and has encouraged people to

do that by offering discounts and special financial plans. So, as more people started using solar energy and the technology improved, the cost went down even more.

Now it's much more affordable for everyone to use!
