Importance of the Spinal cord

The spinal cord is a long, cylindrical structure consisting of tissues, fluids, and nerve cells and is a vital part of the nervous system. It is found in the back and is one of the most important organs in the body. It runs from the brain throughout the backbone.

There are various reasons that make it the most important. Together with the brain, it controls movement and behaviour. It helps carry nerve impulses throughout the body and provides the quickest response to a stimulus from the reflex arc. It helps in the coordination of various processes. The nerve signals help in the movement and functioning of the body's muscles. Without it, the body parts would not be able to communicate with the brain.

As the spinal cord is delicate and can be broken by the shocks during strenuous activity, it is surrounded by a series of ring-like bones called vertebrae that are joined together to form the vertebral column, or backbone. This helps to maintain body balance in an erect position.

Have you ever thought about what would happen if we didn’t have a spinal cord?

We won’t be able to live. The spinal cord provides the essential structural support and interconnections between the life processes in various organs. If there is any injury to this part, it may cause severe problems for our body.

This is why we should prevent any spinal injuries by strengthening our spine by exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy diet, maintaining good posture always, and not indulging in any risky sports or exercises that may cause damage to the spinal cord.
