Barred by the barriers of race, religion and colour, the Earth is the one thing we all have in common. It has taken over 500 million years for complex life to flourish, ecosystems to thrive, and wildlife to burgeon. The appearance of intelligent species on the planet has proved to be both a boon and a curse. It has taken us over 300,000 years to achieve what we see today through revolutions and revolts, discoveries and accidents, and intellect and experimentation, which have paved the way for our advancement.
However, this rapid advancement has overwhelmed our very home, for the depletion of resources, the release of toxic gases and irresponsible waste disposal are promptly altering Earth’s anatomy. So-called 'globalization' and 'development' have caused major alterations to the biosphere which now have the potential to cause severe damage. Scientific breakthroughs of the 21st century now allow us to track the consequences of our actions and understand the severity of the situation at hand, hinting that the future of life on Earth is on the brink of extinction. We must use our scientific intellect and problem-solving ability to backpedal from the road of doom. In an era of uncertainty, we are experiencing wars, pandemics, and ecological damage, simultaneously. Wildfires in Australia, floods in Southeast Asia, and the drought in Eastern Africa are some of the worst ecological disasters caused by human action.
Us humans, who are the cause of this very catastrophe, must recondition our planet. But that’s not all; the United Nations, in cooperation with the governments of the world, strives to restore Earth to its initial beauty by taking various beneficial steps. Activists, corporations and even influencers are putting in efforts to restore our home of its health. Greta Thunberg, Nike, Starbucks, Apple and even Google are walking the extra mile to achieve sustainability. The impact of these companies is colossal, for now the ozone hole is slowly healing itself and electric vehicles are soon to dominate the market. Conservation is crucial for “there is no planet B”. Therefore, on this Earth Day, let us all pledge to play our part and contribute as much as possible to saving our messiah, our sole home, Mother Earth
A pledge to make every day Earth Day
