The world is facing a big problem, climate change. It is hurting people, animals, and plants everywhere. We need to work together to stop it. We need to stop trashing our planet. That is why India started Mission LiFE, or Lifestyle for Environment. It is a big plan to make people live in a way that is good for the planet. Mission LiFE was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow in 2021, and was formally launched on World Environment Day, June 5, 2022.
Mission LiFE wants to get at least one billion people from India and other countries to help the planet from 2022 to 2027. The mission is based on the principle of ‘Lifestyle of the planet, for the planet and by the planet’, which means living in harmony with nature and using resources wisely. Mission LiFE has six main areas: water, transport, food, electricity, waste, and sustainability. It asks people to do simple things like saving water, using public transport, eating local and seasonal food, switching to renewable energy, reducing and recycling waste, and supporting green businesses.
Mission LiFE also uses India’s old and rich culture, which has many traditional and sustainable practices that can be adopted and promoted globally. For example, India has a long history of using natural and biodegradable materials such as bamboo, jute, and cotton for various purposes. India also has a way of living that is simple and not wasteful. Mission LiFE is not just a campaign, but a way of life. It is a way of living that is good for us, good for the planet, and good for future generations. We need to realize that we as citizens also need to take initiative and by joining Mission LiFE, we can become ‘Pro-Planet People’, who are committed to making a positive difference in the world.
