PLAYING IN THE PANDEMIC

“The International Olympic Committee and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have concluded that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics must be postponed.”

Terrible news, isn’t it? Just like the world-class Olympic games, many other sporting events have been cancelled or postponed this year. The historic Wimbledon tournament has been cancelled for the first time since the World War!

But how have sports, as a part of our daily life, been affected by the pandemic? As most sports have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, many students may be experiencing a sense of loss and resentment. High school kids are impacted in a multitude of ways; as they use sports as a way to help reduce stress and control anxiety and depression.

The lockdown has highly affected our daily schedule including our fitness habits. Sport is an integral part of our lives, hence we need to find ways to keep fit during this time as it has had a great impact on our mental, physical, and emotional state. Exercise helps our body release certain hormones called endorphins also known as ‘happy hormones’, these can help us overcome various disorders and keep us in a healthy state of mind.

The more we exercise the more it makes us feel good and keeps our mind and body stay in shape. Keeping fit during this pandemic is essential and even short hours of any form of exercise can contribute to our all-round development. It improves our focus and we stay active during the day. Exercise gives us a boost of energy whether it is to do homework, study, or even house chores.

Going outside is not advisable as it increases the risk of falling sick, so we must find ways of being in shape using the space we have and the equipment at our disposal. There are many resources available to otherwise keep us fit like following an online exercise class.

Hence, I would like to say that keeping our body fit is very important because it is our home. A time full of negative news, stressful phases, and anxiety can be reduced majorly by implementing these small forms of exercise in our daily routines. Stay healthy, stay happy!
