Studying takes up a lot of time in a student's life, and juggling it with their other obligations can be challenging. In order to use their time productively and get everything they had planned done, students can use beneficial time management techniques. One such technique is the Pomodoro technique.
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method for students, working professionals, and procrastinators of all kinds. This time management method was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. This technique is called the Pomodoro technique as he would use a kitchen timer shaped like a tomato which is called a Pomodoro in Italian.
You can divide all of your work into 25-minute focused chunks of time with the Pomodoro Technique. There is a 5-minute pause in between each block of time. In honour of the tomato-shaped kitchen timer Cirillo used when he was an undergraduate, each 25-minute chunk of time is referred to as a Pomodoro (from the Italian word for tomato). a group of four Pomodoros form a set. Likewise, you take a longer break—typically lasting 15 to 30 minutes—after doing four Pomodoros.
This technique has the following steps:
Choose the task to be done and the total time to work on it.
Set the timer for 25 minutes.
Work on the task for 25 minutes.
When the timer rings, take a short break (5 minutes).
Start another Pomodoro for 25 minutes.
After the fourth Pomodoro, take a long break (15 to 30 minutes). Once the long break is finished, return to step 2 and repeat until the study goal is completed.
If you complete a Pomodoro work before the allotted 25 minutes have passed the remaining time should be spent on reviewing the work that you just completed. Alternatively, the remaining time can also be spent on reviewing the list of upcoming tasks for the next planned Pomodoro and start reflecting on or updating them.
To get the most out of your time, it is important that you firstly, break down complex projects. If a task requires more than four Pomodoros, it needs to be divided into smaller, actionable steps. Secondly, combine small tasks. Lastly, do not interrupt a Pomodoro, especially not for using a device, such as a mobile phone.
The Pomodoro technique can be used in daily life to effectively manage time and not waste valuable time. This technique is very effective as it helps an individual work on a task without distractions. It also helps one become more disciplined and concentrate on the task at hand.
By adopting this technique, a student can improve his/her performance in his/her exams and thereby lead a more productive life.
