It is said that books provide wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything. Unfortunately, in these fast-paced times that we live in, people tend to forget to slow down and cherish the joys of reading a good book. Television shows have dominated the minds of children as they lose touch with the worlds they used to visit in storybooks.
It is true when they said that readers make leaders. Reading opens up new dimensions of thought and, as we get transported into unexplored worlds, we widen our horizons of knowledge and imagination. There is no limit to where you can go and what you can see, hear and feel in your mind palace. People say time travel is impossible. However, books not only take you back in time to witness evolution but, can also take you into the future where artificial intelligence rules over humanity.
When we come back to reality, our brains are bursting with creative ideas, thus allowing us to invent, plan and eventually succeed in our innovative endeavours.
We often wrongly associate voracious readers to antisocial people. However, as a voracious reader myself, I can tell you, that is not quite the case. Stories enable us to walk in other peoples' shoes and see the world through their inspiring experiences. This allows us to understand different perspectives and helps us to converse with a diverse group of people.
Reading also uniquely expands our vocabulary. This is important for leaders, since an expanded vocabulary means greater precision in our communication. A vast vocabulary helps us to choose words that are more persuasive when we're trying to
convince people.
Studies have shown that reading helps to lower stress levels. By losing ourselves in a thoroughly engrossing book, we can escape the stresses of everyday life.
Why not then pick up a book and embark upon a wonderful journey?
As Dr Seuss rightly said, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go."
