Books give us the capability to travel anywhere in the world with our feet on the floor of our own house. They are a temporary yet a marvelous escape from reality. Although we have wonderful stories to keep us occupied, these days we tend to pick up our phones instead to pass our time. After mindlessly scrolling through our social media pages, we put the phone down and continue with our work, not even stopping to relax. Every time we think of picking up a book, a spell of laziness takes over us and we resort to spending time on our phones. Movies too are slowly replacing books as people want to consume media in the quickest form, so they watch a short movie, instead of spending a week reading a book.
However, books and movies are not the same. Many books are being adapted into movies, but their plots change completely and often the book and movie barely have anything in common except the names of the characters. Movies are fun to watch but what you read, you will always remember. Books are always memorable, whereas you could easily forget what you see on a screen in seconds, making space for new content. Despite the genre, books always have a lesson to take away. They teach us that even the sky is not your limit and to always dare to step out of the box.
Another downside to movies and social media is screen exposure, which is extremely harmful to our eyes. Social media makes us compare our messy lives to the aesthetic pictures on a screen and many people feel insecure. These screens also make us stay home, instead of exercising, which is injurious to our health.
On the other hand, books show us different people’s lives and how different everyone is from each other, in spite of having the same organs in our bodies. They help us sympathize with people easily. So, don't let reading vanish. Every time you're bored, open your bookshelf, dust a book, curl up on your armchair, grab a cup of hot chocolate and disappear into another world.
