“Showing off is the fool’s idea of glory.”
― Bruce Lee, Hong Kong and American Actor
Emotional insecurity or simply insecurity is a feeling of unease or nervousness that may be triggered by perceiving oneself to be vulnerable or inferior in some way or a sense of vulnerability or instability which threatens one's self-image or ego. This commonly provokes people to show off. When people think that others don’t consider them important, they will try to prove themselves. People become obsessed with trying to show off their beauty and happiness on their social media and soon they stop valuing their real beauty and happiness.
Social media is sometimes the root of this problem as it creates feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction among people. Everyone compares themselves to each other’s posts where they are happier and then they compare it with themselves and start feeling like their life is not worth as much as others. This results in them wanting to prove themselves and they start showing off. What they don’t understand is that most of the time, people are in a similar situation to them and experience social insecurity as well. This feeling causes people to live beyond their means and show off their importance.
In today’s times this issue is getting more and more serious as the number of its mediums, like television and magazines, etc, keep growing. Everyone wants to flaunt their very expensive belongings. They get those items on lease and make everyone believe they can afford those items. Everyone thinks that they should be able to afford it as well so they spend beyond their salary trying to buy those products. Some people even take loans for these articles and stay debt-ridden for a long time.
Some people try to prove themselves to other people and in the process end up hurting themselves. Numerous incidents have come up where people try to take selfies from highly dangerous spots. They take these photos to show how daring they are against all the edited photos on the internet. These photos are mostly taken from high places where the view is very picturesque and unobstructed. This is usually how they fall and grievously injure themselves. Unable to post anything for a very long time, they thus lose everything they wanted to have just because they wanted to show off more.
Some individuals these days don’t check for the mileage and the safety features when they buy a motorbike or a car but see how branded it is and how good it looks. Many people customise their cars to make them look better. They drive around faster than they need to and try dangerous stunts to impress others and then end up hurting both themselves and others
People change their entire lifestyle, personality and character just to show off and compare themselves and their possessions to others. It creates an inferiority complex in others when they are around. Instead of telling individuals that they need to be wealthy to enjoy life, we should be encouraging unity
Showing off also has some positive attributes. It is beneficial when it comes to boosting confidence. If someone has worked hard and long for something it is only suitable that they can enjoy the fruit of their labour. If someone is living within their means and showing off things they can afford to do, then they are not doing anything bad.
Showing off is important in life to feel good and special but this shouldn’t be at someone else’s expense.
