Games and Sports unite us. No matter which team or individual player has our support, all sports enthusiasts will always respect the spirit of the game. The true lifeline of any sport is the spirit of sportsmanship. In sport, there are no walls and superficial barriers between people; we are unified by the love of the game.
The Olympic games, popularly called the world’s largest sporting event, were first staged in Olympia, Greece, from 776 BC through 393 AD. However, after this, it took 1503 years for the Olympic games to begin again. The birth of the modern Olympic games was in 1896, in Athens, Greece.
These Games unite people all around the world because apart from giving a humongous, universal stage for athletes from all walks of life, we are all given uniformity by the same set of rules for everyone. The Olympic Games provide absolutely no space for inequality; there are no exceptions to the rules, and every athlete, no matter where they come from, must compete in accordance with these instructions.
Not only do the Olympic Games provide an opportunity for sportspersons to bring glory to their homeland and showcase their talents on a worldwide platform, but they also give opportunities for fraternizing with people of different countries. Harmony between competitors is a large part of sports. Rivalry is only beneficial during play. This also gives sportspersons a chance to learn from different people and better themselves to achieve excellence in their chosen sport.
For the hosting country in general and the city in particular, the Olympic games provide a golden opportunity to display its culture to the world and to express pride in its identity.
The Olympics opening ceremony is further a chance for us to embrace unity in diversity and appreciate cultures all around the world while acknowledging the fact that despite being different in ways, we are unified to celebrate sport and its spirit.
