Social Media- The thing that destroys us but also brings us together

Social media has its pros and cons. It helps us keep in touch with our friends and family, but it also brings us apart. After the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve all become pretty great at directing our way through social media. But all of us have had those family gatherings where we just didn't want anything to do with talking to each other, but it seemed like the perfect thing to do was just to engross ourselves on that screen. There are endless fights with our parents about taking a break from screen time, but it’s so addicting.

The development of technology has left us with a lot of things, one of them being the addiction to social media. We learn how to express ourselves to the world, but social media also brings down our self-esteem. Cyberbullying; trolling; unnecessary comments on various posts of people, making them feel inferior and insecure. Before the enhancement of social media, things might have been difficult, but in some ways, easier. People would get creative and find ways to entertain themselves, but now all we have to do is click on an app to watch videos or go through posts. Research shows that this slows our brains since we don't feel the need to think and like spending our time mindlessly scrolling through our devices.

There are many alternatives to spending less time in the virtual world such as reading books, writing stories, playing games with our friends, cycling, learning various new things. These things can really help us achieve a new perspective on life (one that doesn't include the virtual world as the centre of its existence)

As a society we should normalise spending time away from screens and focus on our lives in the real world instead of spending most of our time in a virtual one.
