The Adventurous Trek

It was a lovely Sunday evening. Rima, a young, smart and brave fifteen year old adventurous girl, was sitting at home and getting quite bored. She decided to invite her friends who were all her classmates. They all could go on a short trek. That way they would all be able to get some exercise as well as find something to entertain them. She invited four of her friends over. Rahul was a street smart person. He was able to understand the dangers of life in an urban environment. He was bold, daring and adventurous like Rima. Aanvi was a quirky, bubbly person who got extremely scared by spooky things. Gaurav was a shy but very smart person for his age and he could solve any puzzle you threw at him.

They all gathered together at Rima’s house. Gaurav said, “So where are we going for a hike? Should we go to the same place we usually go to? The one that is by the riverside.” Rahul said, “Why don't we go somewhere more daring! We always go to the same place. How about we go to the mysterious hill in the old forest?” Rima replied saying, “Yes why not! Let's all leave immediately before it's too dark.” So they all left with lively and bright spirits, skipping and jumping across their way to the old hill. When they reached the hill, they realised that the place seemed very mysterious. It had huge trees reaching all the way up to the sky. It seemed as if the trees never ended. They all had deep green leaves which were forming a canopy, preventing the sunlight from reaching the herbs and shrubs on the floor of the jungle. Rima, Gaurav and Rahul were ready to go on this unique adventure but Aanvi said, “This looks very intimidating. Are you sure it's safe? We could always come back tomorrow morning when the sun is brighter and there is broad daylight.” Rima said, “It's fine. Nothing will happen, let us go explore!”

They all went into the jungle. Oh! If only they knew what they were heading towards on this journey. As they entered the forest, they felt their surroundings getting darker and darker. The little bit of sunlight available was also slowly fading away. Rima held a brighter lantern in her hand which lit up the path in front of them. She had taken the lantern out of her backpack where she kept many essential supplies that they would need. But when she kept the bag down for one second to take a sip of water a monkey jumped out of nowhere. He took her backpack with all of their supplies and ran away. She only had the lantern left in her hand. Rima said, “Oh no what will we do now. All of our supplies are gone!” Gaurav said, “It's fine. We can manage without the supplies. Let us explore this forest.”

Suddenly after walking a few miles, they heard a scream. It sounded like Aanvi was screaming. They turned to find that she was missing. They ran back tracing their paths to see where she could have gotten lost. After navigating her location based on her screams, they saw that her leg was stuck under a network of climbers and she was unable to help herself out of this tangle. Rahul went down to help her out but got stuck beneath the climbers himself. So now it was up to Gaurav and Rima to think of a plan to save them. If only they had a sharp object to pierce through the vines. They neither had their knife nor the scissors since the monkey had run away with all of their possessions. Gaurav said, “Let's try to cut it using the wood. We can carve it into a knife by using this rock.” They successfully managed to cut through the creepers and set Aanvi and Rahul free. Rima said, “Be careful next time. Look at the path before you take a step. This place seems quite dangerous. Let's go home. I think I may have heard the sound of some scary wild animal as well!”

When they turned around they all froze with terror. All the paths surrounding them looked the same. They did not know which path they should follow to go home. Rahul said, “It's fine, let's just follow this path. We will hopefully figure out some way home.” So they continued on. While walking they could hear the sound of something running. They constantly felt that there was someone or something behind them and watched their every move. They turned towards every sound they heard but couldn't see anything distinctly. Suddenly something swiftly came in front of them. It was a large wild animal with thick fur and large eyes and sharp teeth. It was a bear! Rima whispered saying, “We need to make loud and frightening noises and Gaurav you need to make your fire brighter so that the bear will get intimidated by us or else it will attack us.” So they all responded quickly to this idea. Rahul, Gaurav and Aanvi started screaming and shouting. Rima took some logs which were laying on the carpet of the forest and lit them up with her lantern. She started swinging it in front of the bear. The loud noises and the dazzling heat of the fire frightened the bear. He slowly withdrew himself and disappeared into the old woody barks. Aanvi said, “Wow, that was such an adrenaline rush. Let's try to find our way out of here as soon as possible before something else happens.”

As they went further ahead on the path, Rima saw a small light. Was that how they had entered this forest on top of the hill? She ran towards it and reached a cleared area and was relieved that they managed to escape from the forest. All of them sighed with relief. When they returned home they went on to narrate their stories to their parents, siblings and other family members. No one believed that they had faced a bear and had come back unharmed. However, they will forever carry the memories of this adventurous trek in their minds.
