The Midnight Chronicles - PART I

The cold, midnight breeze pierced Rylie as she sat in the parking lot, her thoughts elsewhere. The sudden disappearance of her neighbor had wholly baffled her. Rather than feeling grieved, this perplexed her. An unknown fear crept through her, the feeling she got every time she knew something was not what it seemed to be.

She tried to ignore it, but she couldn’t. It kept getting to her. She decided to go and get some rest. She could not deal with any more thoughts. Suddenly, angry whispers from the far end of the parking lot brought her out of the trance. Curious, she went closer to get more details, finding a young guy dressed in black talking on his phone. Rylie, being a keen listener, heard most of the conversation.

A woman on the phone was yelling, “ Why did you hide her in the trunk? I asked you to take it and bring her in the transport I sent if she disagreed.”

The young guy seemed arrogant, not like how somebody would talk to their boss or employee, “ I was not planning on locking her in! I was waiting for your transport when she started howling. There were people around so I sedated and locked her in the trunk of my car, but she kicked it open and escaped. I still don’t know whether she has found the police to report me. Do you know how hard it is to stay incognito when the police could be looking for you everywhere? Anyhow, I just found out about something horrible, today. It turns out, the person I kidnapped wasn’t Rylie.”

“What! Please tell me you’re lying!”

“I’m serious! It was her neighbor, a teacher called Kim. I got the wrong person! Rylie could get a phone call from Kim any minute now, telling her everything.

“It’s fine. Let’s think clearly. We can still do something…. But we’ve got to get you out of there, latest by tomorrow morning!”

“But we’ve got to get it for our plan to succeed, haven’t we?”

“Okay. Let’s do-”

Before she could finish her sentence a sharp sound stopped her. Silence enveloped the parking lot, other than the faint, but sound just loud enough to be heard, caused by Rylie’s phone.

Rylie hurriedly tried to turn off her phone, exasperated, only to notice that it was someone she and her supposed ‘enemies’ were expecting. Kim.

The woman was the first to recover, “Jeremy, it looks like somebody just heard our conversation. I’ll be there as soon as possible. Until then, try to catch the person and keep them somewhere hidden. Don’t reveal anything.”

Jeremy hung up the phone and swiftly turned to face Rylie, standing behind a car.

He smirked, “What luck! It’s you!”

He started walking towards her, but Rylie was not going to be caught so fast. She sprinted towards the nearest door she could find. The control room.

She went in and locked all the possible entries. She knew that she would eventually get caught. But she had to buy herself time.

Breathing heavily, she dialed a number on her phone, “Hi, this is Rylie speaking. I need your help.”
