The time of the year we all had been waiting for since last year, the Tokyo Olympics, which were delayed for over a year, has finally arrived. A week has passed, and so far the Olympics have been a delight to watch. For me, this year’s Olympics have wowed me like never before. From the historic Olympic torch run to the breathtaking performance of the players, it has all left me in awe. The thing that strikes me the most is that even though most of the competitors are successful sports players now, they are still grounded and have respect for each other.
The Olympics have also taught me many life lessons, such as the determination to achieve what we aim for, perseverance to do our best, courage to face whatever comes next, and that hard work will always pay off. Above all these, they introduced dreaming big, believing in yourself and upholding the spirit of sportsmanship in all circumstances.
No matter how much we would like to, we cannot win at everything every time. So, we need to learn how to deal with defeat. After a hard-fought game in which everything was left on the playing field in a losing effort, it can be very difficult to look your opponents in the eye and tell them “Good game” or “Good job.” It is the same in life and sports can be a great way of learning this spirit of sportsmanship. It is a brilliant reminder of the fact that none of us are perfect, and we should always learn from our mistakes instead of repeating them or simply refusing to accept them.
It is rightly said by Michael Phelps “You dream. You plan. You reach. There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, with belief, with confidence and trust in yourself and those around you, there are no limits.” Thus, I believe that all of us should engage in at least one sporting activity in our life as it will not only keep us fit, but also teach us discipline and teamwork. Possibly, someday we may participate in the Olympics or some other event, and make our country proud like numerous people have done for their country today.
