The Photograph

Updated: Jan 31, 2022

She finally made it! Kiara flew halfway across the world; it was worth it. She felt proud, excited but most of all, she felt confident. She had worked towards this her whole life, now she felt victorious.

Kiara was very bright; she was quick as a whip and kind and hopeful. She always knew what she wanted: success. Her mother was her best friend, but sadly she passed away when Kiara was ten. Her mother had one dream; to be a doctor but circumstance prevented that. Kiara wanted to be just like her mother. She looked up to her as a constant guide and was mesmerised by the idea of being just like her even though her mother was now just a voice in her conscience. Kiara was different from all the other children in fifth grade. Ordinarily, they wanted to be superheroes and princesses, yet all she wanted was to practice medicine. She felt destined for success.

Accordingly, she worked extremely hard to achieve her dream. Every time she felt low, she looked at a photograph. It was a picture of her and her mother in Vancouver. She was merely eleven months old in the picture. It gave her hope of a future; a merrier one. She graduated from medical school at the top of her class. Her work was so exemplary that her inbox was practically teeming with job offers. She earned a tremendous job at one of the best hospitals in the country.

However, that wasn't enough for her. She wanted better from her life. Where could she move? Where could she flourish more? She had only been to Canada when it came to traveling internationally and thought it a viable option. She did months of research and even applied for multiple jobs there and got several offers. One of the best offers was in Vancouver. So she decided to move out. “What better place to move than Vancouver,” she thought.

There she was, in Vancouver, waiting for her taxi. She reached her new apartment; it was everything she had ever wished for. One could see hope and happiness in her eyes and almost hear the triumphant music that was beating in her heart, but the story didn't end here; the next day she decided to go out and explore the city. She went everywhere; the museums, the parks and even the mall. She had just got there and did not have a car yet, which is why she used the bus. It was inconceivable how clean and beautiful everything was. The urban beaches and its mountain backdrop, it all reminded her of that piece of paper, the photograph which held more importance in her life than any currency note. For her,Vancouver had rightly earned its title of being one the most beautiful and memorable sights in the world. Furthermore, the buses were glistening in the bright sunlight. This bright day brought not only lots of light and brightness to Kiara but also refilled her with hope, passion and new-found energy.

She walked around the city, trying to find the closest bus stop; when she saw a grizzled looking man. He had a scruffy beard and was looking downwards, seemingly asleep, sitting on a bench on the side of the road. She sat next to him, consequently waiting for the bus. What she saw next perplexed her beyond explanation. She saw that same photograph of her and her mother in his hand!
