Ava Johnson sighed softly as she traced the peach-coloured scar on her face. It stood out on her mocha-coloured skin, extending from her right eyebrow to her left cheekbone. Ava was an inspector, and she was always in some kind of danger. She had received the scar about a year ago, and it was slightly challenging to get used to it, even though she saw it everyday. The smile of a bittersweet memory graced her lips as she remembered that day…

Ava panted as she reached the house where the child was being held. A person had informed her that a girl was being held captive in a house. She immediately gathered up her team and took off in her jeep to the designated place. Right now, she flattened up herself against the wall, her gun ready. The police had been trying to catch this man for some time now, and this would be their last chance. Not only did they have to catch the murderer, but they also had to do their best to save the little girl. She was only five years old; Ava could only imagine what her parents were going through.
She took a deep breath and kicked the door open and was greeted to a sight which horrified her. The mad had a knife trained on the girl’s neck, who was crying. He had a mask on his face, and ordered, “Drop the gun, or I will kill this girl!” Ava had no choice; she could not let the girl die. She dropped the gun on the ground and raised her hands in a form of surrender. She was now without any weapons. She however, had ordered her colleagues to wait outside just in case he attempted to do something.
“Look, we just want the girl, we won’t do anything to you unless you hurt her. Just leave her”, she said as she inched closer softly. He calmed down a bit but still held the knife close to the girl. As soon as she was close enough, she rolled on the ground and struck him in the stomach with her elbow, which caused him to double over and loosen his grip on the girl who ran outside. He soon got the upper hand and slashed the knife blindly, which unfortunately caught her unguarded and cut her face. She fell to the ground by the force, and he was about to stab her when one of the constables shot him in the shin, causing him to yelp and fall.
She was then taken to a hospital. She suffered many injuries from the fight they had, and it was later found that the man was mentally unstable. The doctors told her that the cut would heal but a scar would remain, acting as a reminder of the incident.
She could still see the eyes of the eyes of the young girl desperately boring into her face, fear holding her neck in its frigid grasp as the cold blade glinted against her skin. The crazed detachment in the eyes of the man towering over her, as he glared at her in panic; hands twitching, sweat dotting his temples. The moment was frozen in time and space, an unforgettable memory that invaded her thoughts when least expected, the ghost of the pain still lingering in her brain, stirring adrenaline through her blood as-
“What's wrong?"
Ava was brought back to reality when Christina Johnson- her daughter wrapped her arms around her waist and spoke.
She laughed and answered, “Just remembering the day when I got this scar.”
Christina shook her head and placed a kiss on her cheek. “No matter what happens, you will always be beautiful to me."
As Ava looked at her daughter, she felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Christina had grown into a compassionate and resilient young woman, embodying the values that Ava held dear. She knew that she had made a difference not only in the lives of those she helped in her work but also in the life of her daughter. Christina's words touched her heart, reminding her that true beauty came from within.
The scar on Ava's face was a constant reminder of the day she risked her life to save another. It served as a testament to her strength, resilience, and the love she had for her family and her duty. Ava's journey was far from over, but she faced each day with determination and a renewed sense of purpose, ready to make a positive impact on the world around her.
