This New Year...

New Year is the time for people to leave all the bad experiences behind and take a step into the future with positive energy. New Year’s day is followed by different customs and traditions in every household across the globe. Each culture celebrates this day in its own unique way. Some people start planning for a mini-vacation beforehand while some plan to spend quality time with their loved ones. After 2 years, my family and I decided to break out of the Covid-19 fear and went to my grandfather's house for the start of the new year.

Like most other people, this was our first big vacation after Covid-19 struck India. On the day of our departure, my sister and I got ready an hour in advance as we were very excited to go to the airport. On reaching the airport we quickly went through the security check and seated ourselves in a candy shop. We indulged ourselves in various perfume and food stores before our mother told us that it was now time to get onto the flight.

Our trio had so much fun on the flight that we forgot about the passing time and before we knew it, we had reached our destination. After joining my father and Bua, we headed on our 2-hour road trip and reached the city of Jamshedpur. Our grandfather was already waiting for us at the door when we reached. My sister ran towards him while the rest of us got out our luggage.

We arrived on Christmas day so we enjoyed a special dinner of cakes, cookies and macaroons. We all talked and laughed together and in a blink of an eye, it was time for bed.

The next few days went by extremely fast, I wondered where all the time went. Before I knew it, it was New Year's Eve. My sister and I placed our elaborately planned pranks all around the house. My mother and cousin sister made a list of delicious food items, of which fruitcake was marked as the most important item. During the late hours of the morning, my grandfather took my sister and I out to buy New Year cards for all our friends and family.

After lunch, we all sat down and made a list of our resolutions for the New Year. This year I chose to improve on one particular area of my life, excess time spent on the internet. Hours together I sit in front of the system, though I know it is just wasting my time unnecessarily. I decided to cut down the time I use for surfing and make it more productive, rather than just visiting social networking sites and chatting. Through the afternoon we decorated the entire house for the New Year. The roof, balconies, windows were all decorated with different coloured lights and our tables were covered with various sweets, candies and cakes.

When the sun started to set, we left for the club’s annual New Year dinner party and enjoyed ourselves to the fullest. Counting down to the last few seconds of the new year’s made me realise that even though the last few years have been quite negative due to Covid-19, there is still a year to come and I am sure it will be one of more joy and happiness.
