In this hectic world that we live in, nobody is ever stopping. Everyone’s always on the
go, always chasing something and that’s not entirely a bad thing. A society with a goal
oriented focus to do great things is on a fast track to thriving and prospering. Although
even in such a society, there are factors that can assure the loss of said prosperous
future. One such crucial factor is rest or rather the lack of it.
Rest is an important part of our lives which allows us to heal mentally, physically and at
times even spiritually. Loosely translated, it contributes majorly to our EQ (Emotional
Quotient), IQ (Intelligence Quotient) and SQ (Spiritual Quotient).
This new hustle culture of grinding and working 24/7 seems to have become the goal.
WHY? Well, how else is one supposed to attain success? Narayan Murthy (founder of
Infosys) advised youngsters in India to work for 70 hours a week to increase India's
overall productivity. However, this was a proposal that saw fierce debates on the
internet for a reason. This reason being lack of time that prioritizes one’s overall
wellbeing.
Hard work and perseverance are no doubt admirable qualities but lack of proper rest
can and will lead to all that hard work going down the drain. It will lead to burnouts and
individuals feeling physically and psychologically exhausted.
For instance, every student or atleast athlete most probably has a vivid memory of
something going downhill due to them overworking themselves. May it be practicing that
one performance too many times which consumes your energy or even revising the
study material so often that you forget to sleep. No matter how tricky your task is, the
anxiety caused by it should not result in you pushing yourself too far such that it takes a
toll on your health.
To preserve your wellbeing, one can rest in many ways. You can take time doing
something you enjoy, meditate, take a power nap or even a break from work to indulge
in some self care. Sleeping is the best way in which one can take rest. It assures mental
peace, happiness and improves bodily functions. Not to mention the positive dreams
and successful achievements of goals that one envisions while they're at it!
An average human adult requires around 8 hours sleep per night depending on their
profession (labourers require more rest) and special needs (pregnant women and ill
individuals require more rest). Any human claiming to need less than 5 hours of sleep is
either lying or growing dumb in a manner of speaking, claimed several studies.
Not following a proper sleep schedule for more than three days hampers brain efficiency
and the only medicine to heal this disease is to regain your normal state by sleeping
more and taking back your lost time of rest. If this lack of proper sleep time continues for
years, brain activity can be damaged permanently.
Thus, taking a rest day if needed should not be considered a guilty pleasure but a bodily
requirement. Balance in such a scenario can be the key. One must make sure that they
work tirelessly while also prioritising themselves. That being said, excess sleep like
anything else is also bad and will have adverse effects. So a moderate amount of sleep
at regularly scheduled intervals is essential for any individual to thrive at the work they
do.
