Zev Shapiro, The Face of Youth Activism

It is a universally acknowledged fact that the youth of today do not shy away from expressing their views freely. In this digital era, the youth have the means as well as the courage to express themselves and provide input in important social issues. A flag bearer for youth activism, Zev Shapiro (born Zev Dickstein) has become a prominent personality in raising awareness about several social issues that surround him. The 19 year old, who is a resident of Cambridge, Massachusetts, is most known for his activism application, called TurnUp, which is a freehub and social network for youth activism. It encourages young people to vote as well as participate in several events. It has a scrolling news feed which informs the users about the events in their locality, sorted in a systematic manner according to their interests in social justice. It also enables users to meet other activists who share their views through an easy-to-use online medium. It is an effective source for people to advocate social change, which can be carried around in a pocket. It gives the youth of today a voice and connects young activists all over the globe. Zev has been involved in activism since his early days. When he was in the fourth grade, he recognized the need for healthy food for all at his public school in Cambridge, MA and started a petition for healthy food to be given to everyone. He was also interested in politics from an early age and began his political path at the age of nine by volunteering for the senate campaigns of Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey and has spoken to audiences of various sizes about community involvement and participation. He was a featured speaker at the Thrivals in Louisville, KY in 2013 and has made an impact on a substantial number of people. Zev is the face of youth activism and a role model for people all over the globe.
